What are cookies?

A Cookie is a file of small dimensions, made out of letters and numbers that will be stocked on the computer, mobile phone or any other device of the user on which internet is being used. The Cookie is installed by a request issued from a web-server to a browser (Internet Explorer, Chrome or others) and is completely “passive” (it doesn’t contain software, viruses or spyware and it can’t access the data found on the user hard drive).

There are 2 main cookie categories:

  • Cookie sessions – this are temporarily stored in the cookie files of a web browser to be used until the user exits from the page or is closing the browser (when logging on or off on an account on social media)
  • Persistent Cookies – these are stored on the computer’s hard drive or equipment (and usually its life depends on the cookie). The persistent Cookie include the ones placed by another website than the one the user is on at the given time – known as third party cookies – that can be used anonymously to memorize the users interests so that relevant publicity can be delivered.

We use 2 kinds of cookies: per session and persistent. The last ones are temporary files that are stored in the user terminal until the end of the session or closing the browser. Stationary files are stored on the user terminal for a certain designed cookie time or until manually erased by the user.

The cookie itself doesn’t require personal data for usage, and most of the cases can’t identify the internet user. Personal data gathered trough cookies can be stored only to facilitate certain functionalities for the user. The data is crypted in a way that is impossible for unauthorized persons to access them.

Cookie erasing

Usually an app used for webpage access allows saving the cookies on a terminal. These settings can be changed so that the cookies get blocked by the web browser and the user is informed each and every time Cookies are sent his way. Detailed information regarding the different ways of managing Cookies can be found in your browser settings. Restricting the use of  Cookies may affect certain features on the webpage.

Why are Cookies important for the internet?

Cookies are at the heart of the efficient functioning of the Internet, helping to generate a user-friendly browsing experience and is adapted to the preferences and interests of each user. Refusing or disabling cookies may make some sites unusable.

Refusing or disabling cookies doesn’t mean you won’t receive online advertising - but it will no longer be able to take into account your preferences and interests, as shown by your navigation behavior.

Examples of important uses of cookies (which do not require a user to sign in through an account):

  • Content and services tailored to user preferences – categories of products and services;
  • Offers adapted on user interest;
  • Password retention;
  • Retention of child protection filters on Internet content (family mode, safe search features);
  • Limiting the frequency of advertising – limiting the number of advertisements displayed to a particular user on a site;
  • The provision of advertising more relevant to the user;
  • Measurement, optimization and analytics characteristics such as confirmation of a specific level of traffic on a website, what type of content is viewed and how a user arrives on a website (example: search engines, directly from other websites). Websites conduct these analyzes of their use to improve sites for the benefit of users.

Security and Privacy issues

Cookies ARE NOT viruses! They use plain text formats. They are not made up of pieces of code so they cannot be executed, nor can they auto-run. Consequently, it is not possible to duplicate or reply on other networks in order to run or reply again. Because they cannot fulfill these functions, they cannot be considered viruses.
Cookies may, however, be used for negative purposes. Because it stores preference information and user browsing history, both on a specific site, as well as on several other sites, cookies can be used as a form of spyware. Many anti-spyware products are aware of this fact and constantly mark cookies for deletion as part of the anti-virus/anti-spyware delete/scan procedures.

Usually browsers have privacy settings built in that provide different cookie acceptance levels, validity period and automatic deletion after the user has visited a specific site.

Since identity protection is very valuable and represents the right of every Internet user, it is appropriate to know what potential problems cookies may create. Because they constantly transmit information in both directions between the browser and the website, if an attacker or unauthorized person intervenes during the data transmission, the information contained in the cookie may be intercepted. Although very rarely, this can happen if your browser connects to the server using an unencrypted network (for example, an unsecured WiFi network).

Other cookie-based attacks involve wrong cookie settings on servers. If a website does not require the browser to use only encrypted channels, attackers can use this vulnerability to fool browsers to send information through unsecured channels. Attackers then use the information to unauthorized access certain sites. It is very important to be careful in choosing the most appropriate method of protecting personal information.

Tips for safe and responsible navigation based on cookies

Because of their flexibility and the fact that most of the most visited and large sites use cookies, they are almost inevitable. Disabling Cookies will not allow the user access tothe most common and used sites including Youtube, Gmail, Yahoo, and more.

Here are some tips that can make sure you navigate without worrying, although with cookies:

  • Customize your browser settings with cookies to reflect a comfortable level of security for you in the use of cookies.
  • If you don't mind cookies and you're the only person who uses your computer (phone, tablet, or any other device), you can set long timeout periods for storing navigation history and personal access data.
  • If you divide access to device, you can consider setting your browser to delete individual navigation data each time you close your browser. This is an option to access websites that place cookies and to delete any visiting information when the navigation session is closed.
  • Install and constantly update your antispyware software. Many spyware detection and prevention applications include site attack detection. This prevents the browser from accessing websites that could exploit browser vulnerabilities or download dangerous software.
  • Make sure your browser is always up-to-date. Many cookies are made by exploiting the weaknesses of older versions of browsers.

Cookies are everywhere and cannot be avoided if you want to enjoy access to the best and most high-performing Internet sites, whether local or international.

With a clear understanding of how they operate and the benefits they bring, you can take the necessary security measures so you can navigate the Internet with confidence.

Disabling and refusing to receive cookies may make certain sites impracticable or difficult to visit and use. Also, refusing to accept cookies does not mean that you will no longer receive/see online advertising.

It is possible to set your browser to stop accepting cookies, or you can set your browser to accept cookies from a specific site. But, for example, if you're not registered using cookies, you won't be able to leave any comments.

All modern browsers offer the ability to change cookie settings. These settings are usually found in “Options” or in your browser’s “Preferences” menu. To understand these settings, we recommend that you learn more from the following links or you can use the browser's “help” for more details.
